New V&A book on Medieval Jewelry

Medieval Writing
I just got  my copy of Medieval Jewellery in Europe 1100-1500 by Marian Campbell! Total SQUEE! :-D Lots and lots of pretty pictures! [info]reasie - there's a noticeable emphasis on the 1460s - you may want to check it out :-D Pretty, pretty, pretty! Jewelry can really make an outfit - and some of the pieces - I'm not sure I quite understand how they work - they ought to look gaudy, but they don't. :-) There's even some costume pictures I wasn't familiar with before. Quite a few old friends too, but some new. Speaking of biases, in my quick perusal there wasn't a lot of Italian examples... but Northern Europe and England (as one would expect from a Victoria & Albert publication) is well represented.

Oooooh, interesting! Thanks for telling about this book.

I'm guessing the lack of Italian examples might partly be due to the Renaissance starting here, and the time period 1400-1500 is often considered pre-Renaissance and Renaissance in Italy rather than Medieval. There's still 300 years to cover, true, but when it comes to anything Medieval it's always been easier to single out northern Europe.

*goes out to dig up that book*

Italy is always a little weird when compared to England. And/Or vise versa ;-) Speaking of odd aesthetics, I don't think there was a single Spanish picture... must check again :-)

Just bought it. Its only £12.99 (sterling) from Amazon.co.uk.

May end up getting a copy for my sister for Christmas! Would be interesting to see what she recreates from it! ;-)

Ooooh! I'd love to see what she recreates too... ;-) personally i'm quite taken by the 1325 broach illustrating the introduction... but then, I'm fascinated by un-faceted gemstones. Probably because one never sees 'em modernly...

I did like the price of the book, well worth it ;-)

Thank you for posting! This would make an awesome x-mas pressie for my eldest daughter - she's into Burgundian and jewellery making. :-)

you're very welcome! I think it's got more 1460s era stuff then any other single period, but there's still a lot of other pretties too...don't want you to expect it to be _very_ focused... ;-)

There's only a couple paternoster's in it... but the jewelry is gorgeous! :)

ooo! WANT!!

:)
I'm also interested in seeing any extant jewelry of the 12th century - might be able to use it as evidence for the aesthetic in jeweled gowns. :)
